National Public Radio (NPR) did a profile on Senate Chaplain Barry Black this past weekend.  Many of you have probably read his book From the Hood to the Hill.  He was a decorated Rear Admiral of the Navy (Ret.) before becoming Chaplain of the US Senate.  He is also an Adventist pastor.

This story is not only a behind the scenes look at the humanity of our civic leaders but a profile on a man of God that can be a source of encouragement and conversation with our kids. Visit the npr site for the audio interview and story by NPR.

If you are like me, you have used prescription eyeglasses you don’t know what to do with.  Either your prescription has changed or the style just doesn’t define you as well anymore.  Well, let us help you with a great cause to donate your used eyeglasses to…your friends in Roatan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 153 million people worldwide have uncorrected refractive errors (near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism). Refractive errors can easily be corrected with eyeglasses.

Yet, 138 million or 90% of people with uncorrected refractive errors live in African, Asian, and Latin American countries. This is because in many of these countries people cannot afford the cost of a simple pair of eyeglasses.

  • an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s salary
  • a bottle of eye medication to relieve a simple eye infection would probably take food off a family’s table for weeks.
  • a pair of eyeglasses can be the equivalent of a year’s salary (source. http://www.eyeseemission.org/)
  • Our friends in Roatan are living in similar situations as the ones described above.  As part of our outreach this year we will be providing eyeglasses to the community.  Loma Linda Optometry/Dr. Doug Soderblom is partnering with us to help with this project.  You can bring or send in your pre-owned eyeglasses to the Calimesa SDA Church.  391 Myrtlewood Dr. Calimesa, CA 92320.

We can use all types of eyeglasses and sunglasses sunglasses for all ages.

Many of you have seen the images and heard the stories.  As our brothers and sisters are devastated by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti yesterday our young families and children will have an opportunity to be Jesus in our world and love the people of haiti this weekend during Sabbath School.

While we recognize the importance of  our commitment to our friends in Roatan, the disaster in Haiti demands a response from the heart.  So for 1 weekend, (January 16), we will pause from our Coin Drive for Roatan.  We are working on channels of support for Dr. Scott Nelson who is a missionary in Dominican Republic that frequents Haiti and is currently preparing a surgical team to travel to Haiti.  Also, we invite you to consider supporting ADRA which has been carrying out their work in Haiti for over 30 years.

I invite and encourage you to prayerfully do what you and your family can to help and bring in your contributions to your child’s SS class and place your donations in the coin drive pitchers.  This is what we do because we are a group of believers that are committed to Loving God and Loving People.

We will resume our regular Coin Drive for Roatan after this weekend.
